Indiana Legislature Rams through Right-to-Work Measure

With 9 percent of Indianans out of work, and countless more struggling to put food on the table and keep up with mortgage payments, the last thing Indiana families need is a law that will increase economic pain and uncertainty, AFT president Randi Weingarten says. But that's exactly what the Indiana Senate did on Feb. 1, passing so-called right-to-work legislation and sending it to Gov. Mitch Daniels for his signature.

"By jamming this law through against the will of the people, Gov. Daniels chose to ignore the needs of Indiana families and side with deep-pocketed corporate donors waging a coordinated attack on working people," Weingarten says. read more

AFT president Randi Weingarten didn't need to fire up the crowd at the AFT State Legislative Conference. The 200-plus AFT leaders, activists and affiliate staff at the Dec. 9-10 meeting in Washington, D.C., were already primed from the yearlong fight to defend workers' rights, retirement security and the middle class in statehouses across the country.

Acquittal of Texas Nurse in Trial for Reporting Doctor to Medical Board

Anne Mitchell, who was a nurse at Winkler County Memorial Hospital in Kermit, Texas, was acquitted Thursday after standing trial on a felony charge of “misuse of official information.” That charge and her dismissal from the hospital nursing staff followed her anonymous report to the state medical board of allegations of bad practice by a physician. read more
